Democracy is not only voting
The parliamentary democracy exists thanks to its electors, and even when the average of vote possibility seems to be low, even if someone will speak about "Pest or Cholera”, even then is the election the base of democracy. Politics rules our whole life, both as elector or not-elector and political committed or not. With its consequences and decisions we all have to deal. Everybody is touched by it, directly or indirectly, positive or negative. In a free/liberal society nobody is obliged to be committed, but doing so he/she renounces to participate to the political process inside and outside the parliament and have to bear the consequences like someone who tried to take an active part on them. Voting builds for the political confrontation an important and simultaneously easy base for the political commitment. Who doesn’t share the basis of democracy approaches him/her to those authoritarian structures, against which we have a clear position. To evaluate the parties on their principles, reforms and politics is the basis of each democracy and should be, in a living democracy, the ground motivation for voting. The regular elections are only one of the few chances for a democratic participation, and often extra parliamentary work and commitment are more effective then the influence that a little cross in the Election Day may have. Nevertheless we should not leave the right to vote, obtained thanks to historical battles, unused. Go voting!! It is also important to vote those parties which strength the real democracy, and not those which turn down, undermine, go thwart or attack the democratic principles. That is particularly true for the fascist and right conservative parties, against which we have a clear position. The quotation "Nip it in the bud” should not fall into oblivion/not be forgotten, in relationship with the entire fascist tendency which must have no space, neither in Germany nor in other countries. Democracy is more than "going to vote”, and more than choosing between parties; democracy means the right to discuss and to have real participation possibilities in each field of the social life. Influence and co-determination have to be reached also in the economy, so that democracy will not be ruled ad absurdum by some vested interests and their representatives.
- Democracy begins where others end, i.e. after the elections,
- Democracy is critic,
- Democracy is protest,
- Democracy is participation,
- Democracy is saying your opinion - about everything,
- Democracy is a clear position against racism, anti-Semitism, fascism, and populism,
- Democracy is also "going to vote”.
